Are we listening, but not doing?
We deceive ourselves by only listening and not doing because we might think that just hearing or knowing something is enough, but it isn't. When we only listen to the teachings without putting them into practice, we can fool ourselves into believing that we’re living rightly or making progress, when in reality, nothing has changed.
Here’s how the deception works:
- False Sense of Progress: Listening to good advice or learning something new can make us feel like we’ve accomplished something. But if we don’t actually do anything with that knowledge, it doesn’t bring any real change. We might believe we’re improving just by understanding, but without action, our lives stay the same.
- Comfort Without Commitment: Hearing the word can bring comfort, like a motivational speech that makes us feel inspired. However, if we don’t commit to making changes based on what we hear, that inspiration quickly fades, and we’re back where we started. We might think we’re on the right path just because we feel good, but real progress requires effort.
- Ignoring Responsibility: When we listen but don’t act, we might avoid the responsibility that comes with what we’ve learned. For example, if we learn about the importance of forgiveness but don’t actually forgive someone who’s wronged us, we’re not taking responsibility for applying that lesson. We might tell ourselves that understanding the concept is enough, but we’re missing the point of putting it into practice.
In short, we deceive ourselves by thinking that knowledge alone is enough to change our lives, when in fact, it’s the actions we take based on that knowledge that truly make a difference. Without doing, we stay stuck, even though we might believe we’re moving forward.
