SESSION 1

What is the Gospel? (The True Message vs. the False)

The word "Gospel" means “Good News” — but good news about what?

In its purest form, the Gospel is the message of God’s rescue plan for humanity. It's not just about going to heaven or being blessed — it's about God restoring what was broken, through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

📖 The True Gospel

The true Gospel begins with bad news:
We are all sinners, separated from God, unable to save ourselves (Romans 3:23). No amount of effort, religion, or self-improvement can bridge that gap.

But here’s the good news:

“But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” — Romans 5:8

Through Jesus, God did for us what we could never do ourselves:

  • He lived a sinless life.

  • He took our place on the cross.

  • He rose again, defeating death.

  • He offers forgiveness and eternal life to all who believe and follow Him.

This Gospel is not just about being saved from hell — it’s about being reconciled to God, becoming a new creation, and learning to walk in His ways.

It’s a call to repent, believe, and be transformed (Mark 1:15).

⚠️ The False Gospel

Sadly, in today’s world, many distorted versions of the Gospel have taken root. These messages may mention Jesus but leave out the cross, repentance, or submission to God’s will. Some common false versions include:

1. The Prosperity Gospel

  • Teaches that God’s main goal is to make you rich, healthy, and successful.

  • Reduces faith to a tool for personal gain.

  • Treats God like a vending machine — if you say the right words, He must bless you.

2. The Self-Esteem Gospel

  • Says you’re already good enough and just need to believe in yourself.

  • Avoids hard truths about sin, repentance, or the need for a Savior.

  • Turns Christianity into self-help with a spiritual twist.

3. The Easy Believism Gospel

  • Promises salvation with no cost or change of life.

  • Says a simple prayer is enough — no need to follow Jesus or surrender your will.

  • Ignores Jesus’ own words:
“Whoever does not take up their cross and follow Me is not worthy of Me.” — Matthew 10:38

✅ Why This Matters

If we misunderstand the Gospel, we miss the foundation.
Jesus didn’t come just to improve our lives — He came to rescue us from sin and restore us to God’s design. The true Gospel humbles us, but it also sets us free. It calls us to die to self so that we can truly live.

“If anyone would come after Me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow Me.” — Luke 9:23

🔑 The Real Gospel Produces Real Change

When we receive the true Gospel:

  • We stop living for ourselves.

  • We begin learning what it means to walk in truth.

  • We gain the power of the Holy Spirit to live a new life.

  • We grow in love, righteousness, purpose, and obedience.

This is not about perfection — it’s about direction.
The Gospel is not just the starting point — it’s the entire path.

🙏 Final Thought

The Gospel isn’t just a message — it’s a person: Jesus Christ.
He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life (John 14:6).
He didn’t come to make bad people good — He came to make dead people alive.

So ask yourself:

  • Have I believed the true Gospel?

  • Am I following the real Jesus or a comfortable version made in someone else’s image?

The I AM PREPARED program exists to help you answer that — and to equip you to live out the truth with strength, purpose, and clarity.
